When I first heard Disney was creating a Latina princesa, I was overjoyed! I had been waiting for her since I was a little girl. It’s true I loved and learned a lot from Ariel and Jasmine, but I longed for a princesa who spoke my language, shared in mi familia’s Navidad traditions and love of familia. Upon listening to the first song Disney released sung by Elena back in June of 2016, My Time, I started crying from joy. I said aloud, “Yes, oh yes, It is definitely your time, Elena. I’m so happy you’re finally here.” I listened to My Time almost non stop for a whole month and a half. I recorded my first Elena fanfic weeks before the show premiered. Now, said story is up on fanfiction.net. Upon watching the first two episodes on July 22, I cried with joy upon being introduced to Elena, her familia and her world. I loved her bond with her little sister, Isabel, Isa, straight away. Once First Day of Rule and Model Sister were over, I found myself wanting more. I was ready to go on Elena’s adventure with her and rejoice in her victories and feel her pain when she failed. I’m happy to say that with the exception of a few episodes in S1 and two in S2 so far, I love them. I can relate to Elena not only on a cultural level, but also on a personal one. She’s helping me on my own journey of trauma recovery through her music and going on her journey with her. When I heard the first promo for Secret of Avalor, I knew it was going to be something special. Again, while watching it, I wasn’t disappointed for the most part. In fact, I watched it around four in the morning on Nov 20 two years ago. I think I watched it eight times in total that day alone. That’s how much I loved most of it! I found myself horrified upon seeing the memory Elena pushes into Sofia’s mind. I know Elena’s telling Naomi the story, but still. It broke my heart to see Elena witnessing her Mami and Papi’s murder, powerless to stop it. At the same time, I was proud of Craig for not taking the easy way out with Elena’s backstory. Seeing Elena had real trauma to work through helped me relate with her even more if that were possible. I found myself wanting to hug her several times throughout the special. The one part of it involving Sof that I loved was the song sequence the Great Unknown! How much you wanna bet kids everywhere started using that in an attempt to get their parents to take them to WDW? LOL! Okay, back on track. While I understand the story had to be set up and Sofia had to get the tools she needed to free our girl, I found myself waiting anxiously for Elena to be freed. Once she was, I started to truly enjoy the movie. One of my favorite scenes is when Elena and Isa share their first hug after being reunited! The other scene that broke my heart was when Elena tells Sofia about the day Shuriki destroyed her and Isa’s lives forever. I didn’t stop crying for five minutes afterwards. One of the many things I love about Elena is that she’s not perfecta. She’s relatable. She has real pain and trauma to work through, which is something we all have. One of the many amazing things about Elena herself and the show is the heart. Elena views her subjects and kingdom as an extension of her familia. Speaking of familia, she loves them fiercely. She and Isa have an unbreakable sisterly bond that is beautiful to watch. Elena is practically raising Isabel and doing a fantastic job! Elena also has a close one with Sofia. She and Sofia have a bond that is forever. Elena loves that little girl just like she loves Isa. I believe Elena sees Sof as a chosen sister. After all, Elena knows Sofia even better than Miranda and Rolland do! If not Miranda, then definitely Rolland. I treat Elena and Sof’s bond with care whenever I write Elena fanfic where Sofia is involved. Elena tries to treat everyone she meets with kindness and respect, giving them the benefit of the doubt until they give her reason to do otherwise. Unless they’re a villain and she knows this from the start. Does she get along with everyone she meets? No and that’s okay. It’s life. Elena loves and respects her grandparents so much, she puts them on the grand council. In conclusion, I’m excited to continue on Elena’s journey and explore more of Avalor and its surrounding kingdoms with a princesa who is confident, compassionate and bold. Someone I can truly relate to. I see myself in Elena, and it has nothing to do with her outward appearance. While Elena has many wonderful qualities, she’s flawed, which means she’s someone we all can learn from. When I first heard Disney was creating a Latina princesa, I was overjoyed!
